I mean, Cloud I'll grant you. I'll even agree that the "rules" about who is and isn't in basically boil down to "what does Sakurai think?" But while Snake was more associated with Sony, I'll need you to explain this statement to me.

Snake is an interesting one. The reason Snake got in was because Sakurai did his friend, and Metal Gear creator, Hideo Kojima, a favor because Kojima's son wanted one of his father's characters to be in Melee, but the project was well into development that Sakurai could not get Snake in. Thus, it did not really matter how much of a legacy Snake had prior to his inclusion in Smash Bros. Brawl. Of course, you could say its debatable as Twin Snakes was on the GameCube, but it has to be noted that Sakurai and Kojima are really good friends and it likely took precedent when it came to Snake's inclusion.

That's my understanding as well. I guess I'm just a bit confused about how many people are forgetting how big Metal Gear was on the NES: not only was it the only version available in the Americas and much of Europe, but it's legacy lives on in memes to this day ("I feel asleep!"). That game is why so many folks were anticipating Metal Gear Solid in the first place. Shoot, the NES game was big enough that it lead to an NES-exclusive sequel. There's also the Game Boy Color game, which was...surprisingly good?

I guess I can't wrap up my mind here, sorry. I have to say that to tone down my statement and say that Joker is not a "crap choice", but more like "odd". Other third party characters like Sonic, Snake and Bayonetta had a few reasons here and there to make it to the roster, while both Cloud and Joker are just plain weird due to the fact that they don't hold any particular tie with Nintendo or their history. 67 chracters (barring Cloud, Pac-man if you want, and now Joker), in fact, do, so when a character that doesn't align with that general scheme pops up, so it's kind of hard not to think it doesn't feel a little out of place, in spite of the producers' comments that the series is mostly a celebration of video games in general as the ton of Spirits of different media can prove now. So it's not my intention to offer a definite judgement, it's more like an impression, because at the end of the day Joker's inclusion also adds many pros as the ones you've stated.

Now, on another note and to be totally fair, I also don't care much about Joker.

My bet with The_Liquid_Laser: I think the Switch won't surpass the PS2 as the best selling system of all time. If it does, I'll play a game of a list that The_Liquid_Laser will provide, I will have to play it for 50 hours or complete it, whatever comes first.

Admittedly, I wasn't that crazy about Persona 5, but for some reason this got me really excited. Not only was it an unlikely candidate from a game or series that barely has any relevance to Nintendo (besides those weird 3DS games), but it was picked by the folks at Nintendo. I was totally expecting safe, albeit kinda boring 1st party picks. Seeing how Joker is just the 1st of 5, that goes to show almost anything's possible for newcomers in Smash. Gets me pretty excited for what the other 4 can be. Smash is feeling more a celebration of video games in general, and not just for Nintendo, which I find cool. Still hoping Rex with Pyra and Mythra will make it as one of the remaining 4 though.

Some of us thought Nintendo would go for characters for marketing games. No doubt P5 is probably coming to Switch in some form, and no doubt this is just to market the game and get ppl buying/ playing Persona on Nintendo devices. Or its just for PQ2

PS: havent seen a post from you in a while, welcome back?

A friend of mine did say something like that after the Joker reveal. Even if that is the case and P5 does get ported to Smash, I don't really mind. I'm just eager to see how he will play in the game, and I'd def like to try him out. Some people are now hoping for the port announcement now, so I guess it worked?

Also, thanks for the welcoming words

Don't like it. A character with hnoistory on Nintendo doesn't belong in Smash

I feel the same. Joker is the least-popular third party pick yet it seems. If the rest of the DLC picks are like him (out of left-field 1st and 3rd party picks) I'll only be buying the pass for the sake of having all the stages and characters. I'd like to buy the DLC so I can enjoy it. Not just for completion's sake.

Piranha Plant and Joker have turned the Smash roster on its head more than ever before. And that's saying something considering characters like R.O.B., Wii Fit Trainer, and Duck Hunt.

...Let's not kick a man while he's down. Let's just celebrate video games in this latest Smash installment.

That's part of why I was excited for it, and imagine I would be even if I didn't already like Joker's design and P5's stylish art direction that will no doubt influence the stage.

Yeah, even if that is the case with the rest of the dlc pack, I think I'd still be cool with that. Seeing characters like Mario, Pacman, Megaman, Ryu, Cloud, and Megaman together seems like something only possible in a dream. Also, considering dlc characters before got amiibo with them, if they make a Joker amiibo I think I'd actually wanna get that.
