Eh I think I'll be disappointed if that happens no matter what my mindset is. Well with Piranha Plant and Joker both being surprise picks, I think we can expect the next 4 characters to also be ones people weren't expecting. It's apparently Nintendo that chose these characters afterall, and not giving us what we expect is totally their thing. :L

I mean, Cloud I'll grant you. I'll even agree that the "rules" about who is and isn't in basically boil down to "what does Sakurai think?" But while Snake was more associated with Sony, I'll need you to explain this statement to me.

Snake is an interesting one. The reason Snake got in was because Sakurai did his friend, and Metal Gear creator, Hideo Kojima, a favor because Kojima's son wanted one of his father's characters to be in Melee, but the project was well into development that Sakurai could not get Snake in. Thus, it did not really matter how much of a legacy Snake had prior to his inclusion in Smash Bros. Brawl. Of course, you could say its debatable as Twin Snakes was on the GameCube, but it has to be noted that Sakurai and Kojima are really good friends and it likely took precedent when it came to Snake's inclusion.

Admittedly, I wasn't that crazy about Persona 5, but for some reason this got me really excited. Not only was it an unlikely candidate from a game or series that barely has any relevance to Nintendo (besides those weird 3DS games), but it was picked by the folks at Nintendo. I was totally expecting safe, albeit kinda boring 1st party picks. Seeing how Joker is just the 1st of 5, that goes to show almost anything's possible for newcomers in Smash. Gets me pretty excited for what the other 4 can be. Smash is feeling more a celebration of video games in general, and not just for Nintendo, which I find cool. Still hoping Rex with Pyra and Mythra will make it as one of the remaining 4 though.

This very much. I love that Smash is becoming more than just Nintendo. A celebration of video games is what Smash should be: childhood discussions of Mario vs Sonic given life. Sm4sh allowed Link and Cloud to finally cross swords.
