Is there a thread for people who just want to play for fun without turning everything into a super-serious competition?

I love smash, I love playing online, and I love the idea of having a bunch of friends online to play with, but I'm casual with the game and can't stand the 'final destination, fox, no items, 1v1, stock only' types. Games are meant to be fun, not work.

Because competitive players don't have fun playing the game... yeah, you've made me expect no better from you.

Anyways, this here is quite far from being a serious competition, though there are some half-serious players around. There is a channel for friendlies on the discord server we made, and I'm sure some of the people around would be willing to play casually.

Holy fuck stop being an insufferable trash panda. I didn't say pro players didn't enjoy it, I said I don't enjoy it that way which is why I...

you know what? Nevermind. More and more I'm wondering why I even keep coming back to this trash heap of a place.

What's super serious about playing a 1v1 with some people you barely know from a forum?

Have you actually tried playing a 1v1 without items? It's fun. Doesn't have to be work either.

I can't speak for him but I know I hate 1v1 matches without items. used to be in a league in college back when Brawl came out and it was really repetitive. Same levels, same characters, same items (Read: none), and it was like playing 1% of a game to me. I just don't see the appeal.

The thing I like about Smash is that anyone can play it from literal babies smashing buttons to some of the most hardcore pros out there. I'm the kind of gal who plays it with all items, all stages, random characters, smash balls/gauge on. I love how hectic it is, and playing for fun is just the best because I can have 8 people playing all at once on the same screen and nobody cares about winning because we're all having too much fun. When it's 1v1, no items, omega/Final Destination only it's just boring and the purity of competition drains the game of 99% of its soul and heart.

Plus I'm not that good anymore and losing sucks, especially when you're playing stock and get to wait for 5 minutes while the remaining folks duke it out because you were fooling around and lost all three of your stock because you were having too much fun to worry about it.

I'm decent. I can hold my own, but I hate limiting myself to a tiny fraction of the game's options just to experience a more 'competitive' version of the game; two modifiers I dislike in service of the other.

So I understood Runa when he said the game is meant to be fun. No idea why Mzuzek felt like being a prick about it. I also want to find a group of folks to play with online that just have fun and don't take it too seriously. I only like playing time battles with all items with random stage and random characters.

I agree that Smash is both fun casually and competitively. When people try to shit on one or the other as being the wrong way to play or worse then the other, it says more about them then it does about the game itself.

I'm being a prick about it because it fucking triggers me when people say competitive players don't like to have fun. So much for how "elitist" competitive players supposedly are, maybe it's the other way around...

I mean, you just talked about how you like that Smash can be enjoyed by both babies and hardcore pros... and then talked about how competitive play is boring, repetitive, and drains the game of its soul. Does it get any more contradictory than that? Competitive play doesn't drain the game of its soul, dude, it takes it to incredible new heights. Smash has succeeded and continues to grow as a competitive game because of how deep and unique it among every other fighting game. There's a certain "freeform" feel to Smash that isn't present in any other fighting game, that much I think we can all agree on, and competitive play just takes this freeform feel to its maximum (which also means exploring and understanding a wide array of mechanics and interactions that only exist in a game like Smash), while reducing the luck/unfairness factor as much as possible. Yeah, most of the game's stages aren't suited to competitive play. Yeah, items aren't suited to competitive play. And neither are stage morphs, final smashes, or 8-player free-for-alls. It's called a "rule set" - competitive players choose to play the game a certain way, because it allows for the most balanced competition; casual players, well... they also choose to play the game a certain way, however they have most fun with.

You say competitive players ignore most of what the game has to offer (not quite true, because mostly every competitive player started out loving Smash casually and has played through most of the single-player modes and probably played a decent amount of casuals in their life), but the moment you say "1v1s are boring", you're also choosing to ignore it. That's exactly what's cool about Smash, that anyone can play however they want. It's just annoying when people like you or Runa, who prefer casual play, feel the need to call competitive Smash out for being "boring" or saying competitive players don't like to have fun.

This might boggle your mind, but competitive players play the way they do because it's exactly how they have the most fun.

I think you have a fundamental misunderstanding of the idea that a person can find something boring without saying it's necessarily bad. You shouldn't have to be told that just because someone doesn't like a thing that they automatically think it's a terrible thing.

I personally hate playing competitively. I find it boring and repetitive. that doesn't mean that Smash isn't a GREAT game for competitive players. It's really not hard to have an opinion on something while still acknowledging its strenghts and weaknesses outside of one's own tastes. If you look at any of the posts he or I said, we didn't say it was a BAD game, or that it was BAD for competitive players, but that we didn't like competitive play and found it boring because it's not fun to us. The fact that you chose to be upset by someone saying they find a certain playstyle unappealing says more about you than it does us.

I don't know what more to say on the matter. I don't like playing a certain way but that doesn't mean it's not great for other people. I have my opinion but I made it clear that smash is good because it caters to both ends of the spectrun and everything in between.

I'm beginning to see why some particularly shitty people like calling people 'snowflakes'. You just WANT to be offended so you twist things to fit the narrative that people are attacking your chosen playstyle. Cut that shit out. Nobody said that competitive play is bad, just that we don't like it. Huge difference between objectivity and subjectivity.

I love Bloodborne but it's not for everyone and I accept that. You love competitive Smash and it's not for everyone; you should accept that and not leap for the throat of anyone who is critical of your chosen style. Seriously, grow up; you're not twelve anymore.

Yeah I have and it's not fun at all, to me. Playing stock 1v1 with no items puts me in a VERY specific mood, and if I lose I hate it. I'm only kinda okay at Smash so losing all the time would just take the fun out of it. That's why i play multiplayer, all items, all stages, time battles, oftentimes a random character. If I'm not trying my absolute best I don't care if I lose. Being put in a situation where it's JUST the characters with no random elements or hazards, it stops being fun. Hell, even when I'm winning (which I used to do in that environment), I got bored of that playstyle very quickly. Often the same characters in the same level doing the same moves ad nauseum.

I happen to love fucking people up with Jigglypuff or King Dedede but I'd never play 1v1 with them because they're troll characters to me. Sometimes I wanna be cool with Lucario or badass with Ryu but I'm not great with either of them and going into a 1v1 fight with them is a recipe for death. I'd basically have to chose Link, Marth, Ness, or Zelda every time and damn that'd bore me. The glory in Smash comes from the chaos that ensues with items and stages and modifiers. Sure, it's base gameplay is wonderful and some of the best in fighting game history which makes it great for competitive play but jesus I have no interest in that. I avoid most online games because losing all the time (due to me being a filthy casual in most instances) is infuriating.

Do not understand why having a preference and an opinion on what makes a game fun is somehow condemning others. Cat girl is right, it's kind of strange that one has to add a qualifier to subjective statements just to assure certain people that you're not attacking them. Try growing a backbone and stop being offended by people having opinions that don't match up with your own. Gaming is great BECAUSE we have so many different types of gamers and Smash is outstanding because it really does offer something for everyone. I just personally can't stand playing with certain types because it takes all the fun out of it.

All controversy aside. There's a friendlies channel on the Discord where you can set up any kind of match you want.

Where might I find that?

......Runa, all I was suggesting was that competitive play could be fun. I wasn't characterized by any of the things you just wrote in the last paragraph. Don't know why you're mad at me :/
