They had the least powerful in each gen they competed in.

The Saturn was more powerful than early 5th gen systems like the Jaguar and 3DO, the Master System was more powerful than the NES, and the Megadrive was more powerful than the Turbografx-16.

All those consoles you're comparing it to besides the NES are irrelevant. You might as well bring up Tiger game watch.

They're still consoles of the same generation, so to say Sega's were the weakest of their gen isn't accurate.

Even then it's not as black and white.
The Genesis had a CPU that was ahead of the SNES and typically had the advantage in memory transfers.

The Graphics and Audio side of the equation definitely fell in favour towards the Super Nintendo, games link Donkey Kong Country 2 was evidence of that... Nintendo's choice of hardware just had a better bang-for-buck than Sega's attempts.

I was talking about third-party support in Mega Drive years which was pretty good. As you said, Square and Capcom haven't supported MegaDrive that much though but it was most likely because they were afraid of worsening relationship with Nintendo. MegaDrive had one MegaMan game though. It was re-release of first three NES games in one package. Street Fighter 2 also was there. I think Japanese publishers tried to please Nintendo with not supporting Sega heavily. But, western publishers supported it instead. MegaDrive had lots of western third-party exclusives instead of Capcom or Square games.

P.S. Earthbound is Nintendo first-party game.

Western third-party games were laughable back in the day for the most part sadly. The third-party games go beyond Square and Capcom. I believe SNES got TMNT turtles in time from Konami and Sega didn't for example. There is a reason why Nintendo dominated Sega overall.

Also,  Earthbound is only co-owned by Nintendo similar to Pokemon.  Reggie said Nintendo doesn't really own the franchise.

If remember correctly, sega got the hyperstone heist from Konami, which played very similar to turtles in time. It’s didnt have as many levels as turtles in time, but was still a fun game. Oh and you couldn’t throw the enemies at the screen like turtles in time.

Grew up with SEGA, though I never personally owned a SEGA console, PLENTY of friends and family with a Genesis so spent lots of time playing. Streets of Rage 2, Sonic 1-2, Altered Beast, Eternal Champions, Madden. So much nostalgia there.

They don't own IP doesn't mean they don't completely own rights to the first game. I really doubt anyone whose game was funded by Nintendo could even think about releasing it on the other platforms in the 90s. And of course they signed some deal which made it impossible for them to do so. It's like for example Sunset Overdrive situation. Insomniac has rights to IP but they can't release the first game on any platform without Microsoft's permission.

JFYI. Turbografx-16 was more popular than MegaDrive in Japan. It outsold Sega console.

Sega without a doubt :D they have huge IPs (some of them forgotten and underrated) and were always trying to innovate thereselves. I love Nintendo but my heart is and always will be with Sega

Interesting, I actually didn't know that.

Speaking of which, didn't Saturn and Dreamcast similarly have some hardware advantages over PS1 and PS2 respectively?

Should we include the Ouya?

Sunset Overdrive is made by a third party developer and it isn't owned by Microsoft. So it's not first party. Also, Microsoft funded many games like Mass effect, ROTR, NInja Gaiden 2, ect that showed up on other platforms. At the end of the day, Nintendo got a game from a third party developer exclusively just like they did with many others. Which is what made snes great and sega genesis just an okay console. Third party has been and always will be king.
