Forums - Gaming Discussion - Anyone else feel resolution is overrated?

I prefer...

Resolution over detail/effects 23 26.14%

Detail/effects over resolution 65 73.86%

Total:88

I think it depends on the size of the display. Smaller screens, you can barely tell, and things look great. But try to play 720p on like a display larger than 130cm and you'll barely be able to tell what's what.

It depends. At the beginning of the generation the resolution was the most important thing.
After the output of xbox one x, the resolution is no longer important.

The higher the resolution the higher the details:

Agreed...

But for that picture you posted to make sense it would be Batman's face from a great distance. Do we really that level of clarity from something far from the screen? Maybe on a massive screen its nice and noticeable, but you couldn't really notice it on an average living room TV? Not really.

For example, we can already see enemies far off in the distance in a 720p game, in 1080p that distant enemy become more clear and crisp, but do I really need 4K to see his tiny face a little more clear? I'm not sure if that's gonna make a big difference on the enjoyment of the game.

Resolution certainly matters, but there is diminishing returns. I mean I would like to see a game on the X1X that pushes the full 6TF on cutting edge graphics over 4K.

In theory, yes

In practice, the higher resolution costs so much power and space that often texture quality has to be reduced at the same time, thus, while having more details than HD for instance, 4k often doesn't look nearly as great as it's supposed to be.

Also, if your Screen/Monitor is too small, the increase in resolution will be barely discernible, while getting higher detail textures will be much more visible. Just look at the picture and you see just how much they had to zoom in to make the difference obvious.

Yeah... No...

Screen clarity and imagine quality is really important. But I feel 1440p checkerboarded or even native would be enough. I would hope that depth of field and LoD is improved greatly next gen. Because no matter how good your games looks close up, looking into the distance can really hurt the quality of the image, specially for open world games

Eh, Alan Wake has nice looking assets and effects but that resolution is rough. I found it tolerable during that era, but I would modern games avoid going that low. Alan Wake running 1080p on PC is a world of difference on the presentation, but its still enjoyable on the 360

Yeah I edited that part out after playing a bit further, beyond the opening night scene, I mean I still think it looks good but yeah, not quite one of 360's absolute prettiest.

Its also worth noting Remedy went surprisingly low on resolution for Quantum Break. I mean its a 720p game well into the X1's launch and its not even aiming for 60 fps. However, it makes great use of post processing effects so you get a better image than a standard 720p game. Alan Wake on the hand, not so much. I'm surprised MS helped get the game relisted but hasn't funded a remaster or even a 4K patch.

The 7th gen could have really benefitted from dynamic resolution given GPU power was often its biggest obstacle. A game like Alan Wake could have used it. Rage was one of the first times I recall it implemented on consoles and it was pretty late into the 7th gen.

Right, exactly how I feel playing BFV.

I mean the resolution, assets and performance is amazing on X1X. But seeing all the pop in really drags it down, almost a waste of the resources.

I have bee saying this for awhile too. Even made a thread a few years back talking about Resolution benefits with regards to screen sizes.

Ideally, its best to have both. But I believe that framerate, effects and details should never be sacrificed for sharpness (which really is what resolution offers).

Like I would personally take 4k checkerboard rendering (which is like rendering at 1440p but better), with higher quality textures and effects across the board while running at a locked 60fps any and every day over a native 4k struggling to hit 30fps.

It just makes no sense to me. People should look at Ratchet, Horizon, GOW, Detroit and Spiderman (all games that have a really great checkerboarding implementation) and honestly tell me if they feel these games really need to look sharper. Its just makes no sense to me. Even more mind boggling to me is how much of a big deal is made abut resolution when they mass majority of PC gamers aren't even gaming at 4k. I mean if we are honest considering the amount of PC gamers that actually game at 4k/60fps its safe to say that specification is a niche in the PC world. Just a crazy ridiculous waste of resources.

I really, really, really, really hope that come next gen as standard Sony/MS offers a 4K.CB@60fps "performance" mode as standard where the only thing thats dropped is the resolution and then the framerate is increased. That will be my go to game mode for the entirety of that generation.

Right now it is.
