Yep, absolutely. Last month I played the first Red Dead Redemption... on PS3. The worst version of the two, can't remember what the resolution is...

640p, or 1152x640 to be exact.

Considering my best gaming experiences are on PSVR, both are over rated! Although last gen, GTA4 on ps3 on a projector was a bit rough. There's a sweet spot depending on the level of detail in the game.

Nope, people who say they prefer the other are just ones who own a platform which is incapable of both.

There is such a thing as diminishing returns and post processing effects matter. I find 720p still acceptable, 1080p is more ideal, but north of that becomes less important.

As an Xbox One owner I gladly trade resolution/super sampling for higher graphics settings and performance. For example, I was playing the Battlefield V campaign and the resolution looks fantastic, performance feels rock solid, but the LOD settings and pop in is disappointing. I wish it had a more aggressive dynamic resolution in exchange for better graphics settings.

Right now, the most impressive visuals seem to come from high frame rate, and good use of HDR. At least, that's what I find most impressive.

With that said, I do appreciate high resolution. It is an important factor. But, it isn't the only factor, though it sometimes seems like marketers think it is. I assume we got to this point because resolution is easy to explain, easy to understand, and easy to quantify. So, its the low hanging fruit for the marketing department.

That depends how low the resolution is, Xenoblade 2 has horrible resolution and it pisses me off when it gets blurry and i love the game but it does make me hold a grudge meanwhile games like dragon ball fighterz look godly due to the higher resolution meanwhile others like red dead 2 look similar in 1080p or 4k

Some times when I look at things in 720p, mainly videos, the blurry text can bother me and prompt me to change the settings to a higher resolution. But that's different from gaming, since a lower resolution of a video wouldn't produce a native image, which can cause it to be more blurry.
When it comes to games 720p is usually just fine. And anything beyond 1080p is unnecessary to me at this point.

I think 1080p is always gonna look good. We're just at point where going above 1080p is easy with affordable specs. I mean its matter what looks sharp to the human eye and 1080p is just that.

Although the nice thing about games running natively above 1080p is the improved visuals on that same 1080p screen. I'm referring to super sampling and it creates an overall better image even if you don't want to upgrade your display resolution. 16x anisotropic filtering is also great for improving the clarity of textures.

Essentially 1080p is that sweet spot resolution that will always be crisp to the human eye and we can still see improvements of higher native resolution and post processing effects. 4K will become the new standard eventually, but its not as crucial at the jump from 480p or even 720p.

So I'm replaying Alan Wake on the 360 at the moment, in glorious 960x540, and it strikes me; this game still looks great. It's not the sharpest game on the system, but its still one of the prettiest thanks to its superb lighting and environments.

Eh, Alan Wake has nice looking assets and effects but that resolution is rough. I found it tolerable during that era, but I would modern games avoid going that low. Alan Wake running 1080p on PC is a world of difference on the presentation, but its still enjoyable on the 360.

On modern specs like the X1X and Pro, I like that they can do resolution north of 1080p and its great for super sampling. But I'm fine with native 1080p and more resources put into graphics or performance.

Considering going higher resolutions has meant less to me over the years, yeah I find higher resolutions to be overrated ...

Give me ray traced 1080p@30fps games over 4K@120fps games with current visual fidelity ...

How can resolution even be "overrated"? Sure it's marketed to hell by gaming companies but I don't think anyone out there actually thinks games don't look good if they're under 4K or 1440p, not even PC gamers despite what many people claim.

It's not "overrated", there's many cases where resolution makes a game look significantly better. Just like there's many cases where an increase in frame-rate or more detailed graphics make a game more enjoyable.
