Lylat Wars (US: Star Fox 64)

  • Nintendo 64, 3DS
  • 1997
  • Rail-Shooter

More commonly known under the name 'Star Fox 64' in the rest of world, the game was called 'Lylat Wars' in Europe because of a trademark issue with an older Atari game that was already called 'Star Fox'. Similarly, the Super Nintendo game was called 'Starwing' in Europe. The remake on 3DS however, is called by it's regular name.

Known for the most cheesy one-liners in gaming history, the game is most memorable to me for it's replayability due to it's fun, action packed and varied levels. Of all games in existence, this game is highly likely the one where I have seen the end-credits most times. I could almost dream the entire sequence and in fact, taking out the names of the developers, I'd still can. Music included. I know the levels themselves like the back of my hand as well and when playing the 3DS remake one-and-a-half decades later, it felt like I never stopped.

It was always a good game to play for a short time, because the fastest path would only take about an hour. My better liked levels were along other, often harder, routes however so I would usually strive for going the middle or the upper path or a combination. It was interesting that sometimes I would breeze through the uppermost path, while at other times I would fail heavily, ending at the lowermost path instead getting the 'bad' ending. It's really a game where you have to have your day, to do good.

Kula World (US: Roll Away)

The best game to ever grace a PlayStation console wasn't something high profile, but it was the puzzle-game 'Kula World', known as 'Roll Away' in the US. It is a very obscure game. And it's a shame it is.

The player controls a beach-ball around an obstacle course. The ball can roll around all sides of floating blocks and beams and jump from one to another to try to reach the coins, fruits and most importantly the keys, which open up the exits of the levels. Getting the ball on the correct side of the beams is the real puzzle here because you can only go around a side at the ends, and it's very challenging. It's addicting, but there are however so many levels, that I never even finished it. When the player gathers five pieces of fruit, the game proceeds to a bonus level to gather extra points and lives.

It's a timeless game, even if the graphics are dated today and weren't even that good to begin with back then. I've never played another puzzle-game that's as addictive as this one was. Never a platform-game that had you think about your next step, ten steps in advance like this one did. Due to this, it's the only digital "classic" I ever bought off the PSN store to own a second time, the only one worthy.

Ha, I've been zoned out of the whole thing this year sadly!

Is it Theme Hospital? Missing out on the top 10 again? Or maybe SimCity 3000? ;)

The excellent Trails in the Sky?

Hey there!

Yes, Theme Hospital is correct!

SimCity 3000 has already been in my list. The top 10 is just too crowded.

As Obsidian announced a Kickstarter for a new RPG in the like of Baldur's Gate, they campaign skyrocketed. No wonder: Obsidian is founded by people that worked on Baldur's Gate in the past. They promised a modernized game like the infinity games, but with higher resolution, more details, better controls, better interaction. And they delivered. Pillars of Eternity became a great game, so great indeed, that Obsidian decided to fund a sequel which was released this year.

As in the old Infinity games you control a party of adventurers, not a single character. You have all sorts of interactions as you guide your party through the game. And you decide the fate of the whole region.

Three games are still unguessed. I'll give one more hint for each.
#10: (1) Time Compression. (2) Gunblade.
#9: (1) Fear the Old Blood. (2) The night of the hunt is upon us in the city of Yharnam.
#8: (1) Fires fade and herald the coming of the age of dark once again. (2) Bring back the Lords of Cinder to their thrones.

More hints:

16.a)  "Green Warrior is about to die!"
b)  This arcade game is the second in the series.  In the first game you couldn't pick the color of your warrior, wizard, elf or valkyrie.
c)  This game is named after a piece of armor.

10. a)  In this Golden Era arcade game, your character looks kind of like a smurf with a bicycle pump.
b)  Pump up monsters to make them explode.

8.  A 90's fantasy themed arcade game made by Capcom, first in the series.

7.  A remake of this PS2 game was released on Switch the same day as Super Smash Bros Ultimate.

16. Gauntlet II

10. Dig dug

Both correct.
