Forums - Gaming Discussion - Telltale hit with massive layoffs, effectively closing down the company.

That's so sad, I loved The Walking Dead and Tales from the Borderlands. I still have to play some of their games.

The Final Season had a great start. Was it cancelled too? Seriously, this is so hard to believe...

i’m really not surprised. they were trying to do way too much. you could tell that the quality of their titles wasn’t getting better either.

instead of trying to improve their storytelling and gameplay formula, they just spread the same old formula out across far too many games.

i feel bad for the employees, but for the gaming industry this is probably for the best. i hope another developer can fill the void in this story-focused genre but improve upon what’s already been done.

I remember playing the demo for TWD Season 1 years ago and finding the "gameplay" (or lack of it) to be a deal breaker. Even though I appreciate game devs such as them actually putting some effort into their storytelling (unlike most games), I do need at least somewhat-decent gameplay to be wrapped around a great story.

Anyway, hopefully the employees will find jobs in a better company and someone will try this type of deep, branching narratives with better gameplay in the future.

From what I can find on the internet, it seems the final two episodes have been cancelled, and the second episode (Out next week) is the final one. That sucks!

But you could pre order those episodes already in the season pass? Couldn't you? Refunds will have to be issued.

at the end of the day they were a company that sold glorified fan-fictions as video games. they were not destined to last forever

Yeah I'd imagine people will be able to get refunds, otherwise it's gonna' look like a shitshow with all the complaints, lol

They'll have to take the owners of the company to court over it if the company no longer exists.

Wow, to not even get to finish their walking dead story, what a complete disaster. I've not even started season 2 yet and without a proper ending to the series I might not bother.

The episodic release format was bad, the games were mostly good, surprised at this news.

Well that happens when you work on a dozen projects at the same time.
I guess people became bored of these kind of games (just like me) where every choice you make doesn't change the game at all.
They just lacked innovation and that's what got them eventually.

And here I thought about buying the Season pass for TWD Final Season ...

I imagine that's what killed them: people (like me) who were “thinking about buying” but refused to do so until they knew that the game was worth the candle. Too many times we hear people getting excited by the start of an episodic story but the ending usually lets them down (Mass Effect 3, for example). When your entire business model depends on stringing out these long narratives with an audience that gets tired waiting you're eventually going to run out of purchasers.

I actually purchased a few of their games (Tales of Monkey Island, Back to the Future) at the start of the decade, but then they focused more or less exclusively on The Walking Dead, a franchise I don't really have any interest in, for most of the decade, and then by the time they started branching out into other stuff (which, as others have said, they probably did a little too much) I had moved onto other things.

Still, adventure games had been pretty much dead until they came along and revived the genre; shame to see them go.
