Forums - Movies & TV - Star Wars: The Last Jedi Is Currently The Best Selling Blu-ray Of 2018 (USA)

I think the movie is garbage but I knew that the boycott wouldn't do a dent to its sales. It's a monster franchise. Personally, I'm okay with just not supporting the movies or any other product that has the same lack of quality storytelling in the franchise, which means abandoning it for the most part.

Unless they made a movie out of the Bane Trilogy. I would watch the hell out of that....but they probably won't.

This is only because Avengers isn't out yet.

Hmm, pie.

Blade runner even being on this list is still pretty great compared to how it bombed.
TLJ was impressive visually but the plot was just pretty meh, nothing is happening in this new trilogy and there isn't much memorable. I wished Rey and Ben would just made a team and fight Luke. That would have been great but they went the boring route.

Also, don't get the hype around IT. Saw it, thought it was pretty lazy for the most profitable horror movie of all time. Still think The conjuring 1 is one of the best horror movie of this decade and IT isn't even top 5 imo.

Agreed.

Well happy with the blade runner sales actually. At the end of the day, its a niche film. Physical format sales of the original is what got us this sequel.

I love how people always say "Wow, big numbers, it's a big success, you can't say it underperformed!", while completely forgetting to compare the numbers to the previous movies. If the previous movie really sold 6M, then 3M is an underwhelming performance. And I don't understand the "it's already a hit", since BR and DVD sales are a lot stronger closer to the release.

It's like saying "Wow, GTA6 sold 20 millions, it's better than any other recent games, you can't say that it underperformed!", while ignoring that the previous game made 3 or 4 times that (hypothetical scenario, of course).

Oh, that looks like a sharp drop of home video sales from TFA. And BP will outsell TLJ within the month.

I'm not saying it's even the main factor in the difference of sales, but The Last Jedi is on Netflix, has been for a long time, and The Force Awakens isn't.

I wouldn't be surprised if there was indeed a correlation, but an opposite one. TLJ numbers are lower than the previous one and lower than expected, so they had to sell the right to Netflix to get as much money as possible out of it (and pretty early too). They didn't need Netflix' money for TFA apparently. Or since the numbers are bad, the streaming rights are cheaper than TFA, and that's why one is on Netflix and not the other.

Yeah that makes sense to me. They also sold the TV rights to TBS a couple years ago and then regretted it when planning their streaming service.

Just because it's 1. doesn't mean Disney will be happy. Anything else than first place would be a joke for a main Star Wars movie in US with the other movies competing with it.

Sure, after ticket sales Disney probably didn't expect much higher Blu-Ray sales but Disney expected higher ticket and with that also higher Blu-Ray sales before the movie was in cinema, that's for sure.

They may or may not be happy with these numbers - I think Disney would have tempered their expectations accordingly considering that both The Empire Strikes Back and Attack of the Clones made far less at the box office (and home video in the latter's case) than their immediate predecessors, but exactly by how much is the real question.

In any case, I'd imagine Solo's going to be the one they're more immediately concerned about. Even if the vast majority of fans are boycotting the franchise (which I don't believe), going by these Blu-Ray numbers there should still be at least enough casual audience interest for Solo to have made as much as a mid-tier MCU film, and it couldn't even do that.

Disney laughs in money

Oh yea, I'm sure Disney was laughing when TLJ performed worse than the lowest of expectations and led to a sharp decline in merch sales.  Bet they laughed all the way to the bank when they had to take out $100M+ to cover the loses of Solo, the first ever SW flop.

Whatever belief helps you sleep at night buddy.

Oh, I sleep fine in this thing we like to call reality.  Not sure why you need to live in this contextless world where TLJ 100% met Disney's expectations, even though by every measure it did not, and the SW franchise is fine, even though it just had its first flop in its 40+ years of being, to sleep well.  But, hey, different strokes.

Shh, no.  Don't tell it like it is.  TLJ was a complete success and Disney is in no way trying to get as much cash from it since its sales didn't live up to expectations.

Interesting to note that on Amazon Prime, to buy TFA is $20 after being out for 2 years.  TLJ? $11 after a few months.  Same for Youtube Movies.  Says all you need to know about its performance.
