Hey everyone, welcome to the 2018 NFL Thread.

Our thread/prediction league runner in years past has sadly decided to step down for this year, so with his blessing, I'll be running the show instead for the time being. As with previous seasons, there will be several different components to the NFL Thread beyond just generally discussing games/teams/whatever else goes on in the league. All users are welcome to participate in any, all, or none of these components; you are not required to participate in any of them to participate in all. These include:

#1: Bracket Predictions (Closed)

#2: Weekly Predictions

#3: Fantasy Football (Closed)

#4: Postseason Bracket (TBA)

The following posts will detail the various components.

Weekly predictions involve (perhaps somewhat obviously) predicting the individual matchups of any given week. Unlike the bracket predictions, these will be done on a week by week basis; in other words, you're not picking all 256 games before the season starts. The layout for any given week will look like this:

ATL@PHI x CIN@IND x BUF@BAL x TB@NO x
HOU@NE x SF@MIN x TEN@MIA x JAX@NYG x
PIT@CLE x KC@LAC x DAL@CAR x WAS@ARI x
SEA@DEN x CHI@GB x NYG@DET x LAR@OAK x by __

To make predictions, copy the table for the week (it will look something like the above, with matchups adjusted for whatever week it is) into a new post on this thread. Place a "1" or a "2" in the column to the right of the matchup; 1 indicates picking the away team, 2 indicates picking the home team. For the final matchup of the week (usually Monday Night Football), you will also predict how many points the victorious team will win by. A brief example of a completed prediction sheet:

ATL@PHI 2 CIN@IND 2 BUF@BAL 2 TB@NO 2
HOU@NE 2 SF@MIN 2 TEN@MIA 1 JAX@NYG 1
PIT@CLE 1 KC@LAC 1 DAL@CAR 1 WAS@ARI 2
SEA@DEN 1 CHI@GB 2 NYG@DET 2 LAR@OAK

1 by 10

In this example, Philadelphia (the home team) was picked to beat Atlanta (the away team), so a "2" was put to the right of that matchup. Conversely, Pittsburgh (the away team) was picked to beat Cleveland (the home team), so a "1" was put to the right of that matchup. Finally, the Rams were picked to beat Oakland by 10 points, so "1 by 10" was put to the right of that matchup.

If for any reason you wish to pick a tie, simply put "T" in the column where 1 or 2 would normally be placed.

There are a few additional rules that will be enforced as well;

A: RULES

#1-A: Deadlines: The deadline to pick a game is that stated kickoff time by the league. In nearly all cases, this will be either 1:00, 4:30, or 8:30 Eastern (adjust for your own timezones). It is your responsibility to ensure that your predictions for any particular game are in by the time that game is scheduled to start. Emphasis on scheduled; even if the game ends up being slightly delayed and you manage to get your predictions in after the scheduled start time but before the actual kickoff, it will not count.

#2-A: Editing Predictions: If, for any reason, you wish to adjust your predictions after posting them initially, it is highly recommended that you create a new post. Now that VGChartz has timestamps for edits, the issue with cheating is no longer present, but your chances of being missed by me are significantly higher if you do not create a new post alerting me to whatever changes you made. Ideally, any edits will simply quote the post with your old predictions, and have a bolded number indicating your changed prediction, like so:

ATL@PHI 2 CIN@IND 2 BUF@BAL 2 TB@NO 2
HOU@NE 2 SF@MIN 2 TEN@MIA 1 JAX@NYG 2
PIT@CLE 1 KC@LAC 1 DAL@CAR 1 WAS@ARI 2
SEA@DEN 2 CHI@GB 2 NYG@DET 2 LAR@OAK

1 by 10

This makes it very easy for me to tell what was changed, and I'm far less likely to miss something.

#3-A: Final Game of the Week: As previously stated, for the last game of the week, you should predict the margin of victory. For Week 1-16, this will be Monday Night Football. Week 17 does not have a Monday Night game, so it will be the Sunday Night game. Predicting the margin of victory isn't a requirement; your pick will not be dismissed outright if you do not do so, but you will miss the opportunity for some tiebreaker points (more on that in a bit).

#4-A: Cheating: Anyone who is caught cheating or attempting to cheat by whatever means will, at the very least, will forfeit every prediction for that week. You may or may not be banned entirely depending on the severity of the offense. Repeat offenders will be banned.

#5-A: PMing Predictions: If, for some reason, you are concerned about someone else gaining an advantage by knowing your predictions (e.g. it's the final week and you need to make up a few games to pass them, so they'll pick whoever you do in order to keep that from happening), you may PM your picks to me. If I am the one you're concerned about gaining an advantage, there will be another member (yet to be determined) present in order to handle that.

B: SCORING & WEEKLY RESULTS

#1-B: Points: Each game correctly picked earns one point.

#2-B: Prediction Points (PP): The person with the most, second most, and third most correct picks in a week will earn 4, 2, and 1 prediction points, respectively. There are no tiebreakers, so if multiple people finish in first, they will each receive 4 PP.

#3-B: Perfect Result (PR): Regardless of placement in the standings for that week, anyone has the opportunity to pick up an additional 1 PP if they correctly predict the winner and margin of victory of the week's last game.

#4-B: Perfect Week (PW): If anyone manages to correctly predict every game in a week, they will receive 2 additional PP. To my knowledge, this has never happened in the history of this thread, so it's a pretty rare feat, but the reward is there just in case.

#5-B: Winning the League: The winner of the league is the person at the end of the year with the most points. If two or more people tie with the same number of points, the first tiebreaker is number of PP. After that will be number of placements inside the Top 3, followed by number of first places finishes and number of second place finishes. If the stars align and somehow all of those end in a tie as well, the winner will be determined by a best two out of three match in Smash Bros.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

They'll get their chance pretty quickly, considering they play both of those teams in the first 3 weeks. Good luck lol
