That's nice at all, but there has been a massive run up in almost all stock markets worldwide for the last several years. Tons of companies are at or near their all-time highs.

" to become the biggest Japanese electronics maker by market capitalization for the first time in more than 15 years."

By definition of the word "Biggest" not all Japanese electronics companies are doing this.

Correct.  And, as I said, it is nice.  Sony is doing well.  But, it is important to keep things in perspective.  Most of their competitors, and the vast majority of publicly traded companies all around the world are seeing market caps at or near all time highs.

Now they should advertise their flagship smartphones more!!! Xperia ZX2 Premium looks really fantastic!!!!!

I wish Xperia would go away. Selling devices that loose you money, while boosting the userbase of a direct competitor is terrible business. They need to get their Phones and TVs running on their OS and connected to their Store. The expereince between their Consoles, Phones, and TVs should be unified and seamless. If they continue to rely on Google, and refuse to expand their ecosystem beyond consoles, this success will be short lived.

Long way off from an all time high of 142.38. They lost so much ground for like 20 years straight.

Sony had and still has all the tools to be a major player in all aspects ranging across OS, Hardware, Software, Digital Store Front, Music, Games, Movies, TV, Displays, Stereos, Spreakers, and more. All they have to do is just unify behind a common goal. Sadley, they just can not get all divisions on the same page. Even today continue to fight against each other. As they continued to fight with no division gaining any ground, and billions being lost, investors almost completely gave up on them. Now that PlayStation has taken a clear cut lead in profitability, and growth, along with success in the CMOS business, investors are slowly starting to see the possability of good things to come. If they can just get every division on board to unify behind the PlayStation OS and PlayStation Store, then they will be on their way to rocketing past their previous record high.

If Sony can unite all divisions, and deliver a unified ecosystem, that offers a seemless expereince across all products, and delivers the best of Sony directly to all of their devices, they will give anyone a run for their money.

This is so true. They should do something along the lines of what some of those online personal projects suggest as e.g. this one: https://itsasonyblog.wordpress.com

So...is the cross play thing the new buzzword at the moment?

It would be great for the industry but Sony's not too receptive to it.

I concur with the consistency problem.  They need to send a clearer image regarding their product line-up.  They have like 04 49inches TVs.  They should just have the SUPER TOP TIER and the middle tier of the "standard" sizes and nothing more.

And regarding the phones something similar should be done.  So you have the Flagship model, middle tier, and low tier.  Each with their own PRO / PREMIUM model with better specs to lower the distance between the specs of the next tier.

That's a lot of phones and TVs. I know more options are good, but this is a bit overwhelming. Just cut off the fat. Why is this the case in the first place?

Great link. If Sony followed what is laid out there, and eventually got all of their devices running on their own OS, then over the next decade, they could start to make a charge at Google, Apple, and Microsoft. I believe they are going to have to get it together fast though, because PlayStation is going to come under attack in the Home Console market with more consoles, and streaming from almost every direction. They need to capitalize now, by expanding PlayStation to Mobile, and getting the PS OS on their TV's. They can't just lay down as others bring the fight to them. They have to go after the Mobile space, as the Mobile players come after the console space.

Exactly. For many years Sony has thrown a bunch of random products at their customers to see if something sticks. They haven’t had a clear goal or target group but have instead tried to cater to both the discount and premium market. They need to consolidate and streamline their business.

I agree. They have to act now.

Streaming and mobile gaming will soon eat into PlayStation’s market share (more than they already have). Expanding Orbis OS to run on not only PS4 but also phones and TVs would be a solid starting point. And honestly, Sony has nothing to lose by leaving Android (both their phone and TV market shares are diminishing and their product portfolio a mess).

Of course their services (PS Now, PS Vue, PS Video, and PS Music) would have to be deeply integrated in the OS as this would give them an upper hand in the battle to offer a connected experience across all devices (if you pause a game on your phone, you’ll be able to continue on your PS4 or TV when returning home).

Mobile gaming is now challenging console gaming directly in that it offers an experience close to the one offered by home consoles. As the leader of console gaming, Sony will have a clear advantage bringing the PlayStation brand, store, content, and maybe even controls to mobiles.

They have a huge challenge though. Smartphone owners won’t buy a phone unless it grants them access to all of their favorite apps and not even Microsoft (with its deep pockets) managed to get developers put out versions of their apps on Windows Phone.
