Forums - Nintendo Discussion - The biggest problem with 3rd party ports on Switch...

I never understood, why the price of videogames drops so fast. They don't really loose their value.

This is true, that is why I was willing to pay the 60 bucks initially.  A good game is a good game.

But when a better deal is staring you in the face...well I could not justify not jumping on it.  For my portable needs, while not preferable, I still have remote play on my VITA and since my truck has Wifi, I can utilize it pretty much anywhere I want.

As I said however, I understand why the games should be there from a consumer standpoint.  I am starting to wonder if the number of people that need them will generate enough sales at a 60 dollar price point to justify the port from a dev standpoint though.  Current sales trends suggest not for most ports so far however.  350k for DOOM (a great port I own) is a perfect example.

I think next year or two the ports will become closer to release of the main games too, so it won't feel like you are hurting the wallet too much.

However the scary thing is these days game drop like 50% in some instances within 2-3months of release. This used to be rare here. Now there a sales that are basically running for months too that used to be say a couple weeks

I think your thoughts on economics need to be questioned when you think you are getting the games for free because you are trading in a ps4.

Money can be exchanged for goods and services, but goods and services can also be exchanged for goods and services, at no point do the games become free, you are giving a system which has a resale value of €275, you are using that to get 165 worth of gamestop store credit to buy games, your choice to utilize the ease of gamestop to do this trade rather than selling your PS4 yourself for 110 more shows that you really have more worries than a switch title which came out last week costing 60 compared to the ps4 version which launched 9 months ago costing 20, had you invested the time to jump on a facebook group to sell the system you would have had enough to buy the switch versions of the games you wanted, but now you've added more titles to the backlog you have on the ps4 rather than on a system you can shove in your pocket to work through those games when you get a few minutes.

Just some food for thought.

I am not huurting for money, just looking to make the biggest return on my PS4.  I can afford to use my extra PS4 as trade in to aquire extra games at no cost.  I know that is not the case for everyone, but it is for me.  That does not stop me from being able to get exta games off of using trade in credit vs selling for money.  I did not have to use my bank account, so to me they are free as it was just sitting around doing nothing.  I know nothing is truly free, or I would have had a hard time getting where I am in life if I did not.

Let it also be noted I never buy games used as I believe that if I am to buy a game, the devs should get their cut of my money.  So shopping around on facebook is not in my personal list of options.

You wanted to make the biggest return on your ps4... so you traded it to gamestop who'll add 110 to the store credit they gave you for it and sell it?

I wasn't suggesting you go on facebook to buy Switch games used btw, was saying you could have went on one to sell your PS4 then use that money to buy the Switch versions of the games. That would have meant that another person gets your ps4 for around the same as what Gamestop will sell it for or slightly less. Then you would have had an extra 110 to give to Devs with new copies of Switch games instead of buying the discounted ps4 inventory from Gamestop, on top of gifting them 110 for the transaction.

Just looked on facebook.  Most 500gb PS4s with no games are going to around 150 to 175.  Some are asking for more but are including games (I would not).  I traded mine in for 165 store credit, so I would have been in arguably the same boat that I was already in.

So by going to gamestop, I got pretty much what I would have gotten on facebook, minus the hassle of waiting, meeting, or shipping.  Sorry, but it just does not seem like a much better option.

So you don't mind splurging extra money on another PS4 that plays the exact same games; you don't mind splurging for a frivolous portable system that requires expensive proprietary memory cards, and had all 1st part support dropped after about a year; but when it comes to buying a version of game that perfectly suits your needs, that extra $40 is just too much.
Better to just buy a bunch more cheap games for a system you already have an ever growing backlog for, and not only justify it with this bizarre logic, but try to sell it like some revelation.

One, my PS4 Pro was a gift, so I traded in my launch PS4.

Two, I got my VITA a long time ago, and as someone who enjoys JRPGs, it is not lacking in any regard.  I have also used cross play with Call of Duty Ghosts, Fallout 4, Evil Within, and many others to maximize my playtime.  I had no problem buying a VITA back then, just like I have no problem buying my Switch on launch day.  I do not regret either purchase.  You are really reaching with that one bud.

The 40 bucks was not too much, till I saw the same game for 40 bucks less at 4k with HDR with the ability to remote play for extra time.  It is proof that the price point is a real problem for some (from what I hear many).

My backlog consists of...

Metal Gear Solid 5

Far Cry 4

Dark Souls 3

GTA 5

Those are all older games that I had when I started my Zelda marathon to beat every canon mainline game the year before BotW released.  I will play them eventually, but I do not feel like playing them right now.  I would rather play the games I bought now.  Seeing how old those games should also make it evident that while I do have an existing backlog, I am able to keep up with the more current releases as they come.

Look at my Switch game list on my profile, look at my trophie list on my PS4, both will show you that while I passed on a few games I got a good while back, I know how to keep up and finish 90% of what I buy.  I will also finish every game I just got and at the start of next year, pick up the games I want over the holiday.  You are trying so hard to act like I am being irrational yet my profiles show indisputable proof that you are wrong.

I am not sure why you seem so intent on trying to make me look like I wasted money.  I will enjoy every game I got so you are only wasting your breath.  Are you upset that I did not support 3rd party games because I spent my money elsewhere?  Or are you upset because you realize that the pricepoint is a real problem, but you do not want to admit it?

I honestly can't tell with you because what seemed like a discussion on the topic seems to have turned to you trying your hardest to discredit my decision like you know my habbits and what I have or don't have at my disposal.  By doing so  you are only hurting your own point.  The truth is, you do not know what suits my needs nor what I can do to adjust to my needs.  So why do you act like you do?

OP's got some good points, economically it doesn't make sense to buy Switch ports when they are considerably cheaper on PS4, but the thing is portability. For example, I work all day, when I get home I got chores to do, after I'm done with everything I rather go to bed and play with the Switch for a while than go to the game room and seclude myself there to play with the PS4. So, I guess, my point is for some people the portability factor outweighs the price difference. Ohh and BTW none of the games you got were free, you paid money for the PS4 that you traded in so there's that...

Yeah, I benefit from it too.  That is why I also use remote play on my VITA quite often.  I know the portability is a big factor for many, it is why I nearly got Wolfenstein 2 for Switch instead.  However when I ended up going a different route, it made me question if there are enough people that value to portability as 3rd party sales are down for most ports  mainly for being late ports at higher prices.  Just because it may benefit a number of people, if it does not resonate with enough players to justify the extra cost, devs will see no point in making the port at all.  With that in mind, it is a huge problem for Switch ports regardless of how convenient they may be for you or I.

And the free thing...figure of speach dude lol.  It feels free to me because my launch PS4 has been around for so long, getting rid of it as it no longer served a purpose allowed me to get the games without spending money from my bank account.  Do not read too much into it. ;)

I'm really only going on everything you say, and you seem to constantly contradict yourself:

You say that the difference in price point is a real problem, but then you also mention that you're not hurting for money at all.
You say you can barely find time at home to play games, but you'll gladly buy games in bulk for a home console system and make a whole schedule trying to fit them in.
You say having them in 4K(we all know it hardly plays anything in actual 4K) HDR is a big appeal, but then you also have to stream them on your Vita to find time for them, which is obviously not in 4K HDR and not as convenient as having the game natively on a system.
"...as my backlog on PS4 is now too massive for me to keep spending money." Considering you now claim that your 'massive' backlog is actually only four games (plus I guess the few you've added now), you were either greatly exaggerating about that before or lying now.

I just don't even know where the contradictions stop. I'm almost curious to know who bought you a PS4 Pro as a gift, but It's not really my business.
