Forums - Gaming Discussion - Halo 3 Vs. Gears of War Vs. Metroid Prime 3 Vs. Resistance: Fall of Man

Oh I didn't really look up Crysis. I guess that would be the PC's FPS entry, but doesn't have a proven fanbase. HL2 ep2 would be a better entry if you wanna touch down on the PC. I am a HL2 fanboy too.

Edit, Bioshock is coming out on both the PC and Xbox 360.

Resistance against Halo or GoW? Are you kidding? Killzone 2 is a Sony's answer for Halo.

The first Killzone sucked, so I wouldn't say it's certain that it's better than Resistance: FoM.

Yeah, but then Guerrilla Games was still independent. Who knows how they will now fare under Sony. And you can't deny that the buzz Killzone made at E3 '05 isn't still lingering. I bet everyone across the board is curious if they can deliver.

I think that Killzone 2 will really be something special, I've been playing KL and its an amazing game and from all the reviews I have read there has only really been one criticism, its too hard. However, I think that there is a reason that Guerilla have been working it for three years and it's now the most expensive multimedia project in Holland, it is going to be amazing. Although that trailer was only target footage, you all saw how close MotorStorm came to its target footage. With the extra time, they can find more power and we'll see an incredible game.

Also, I might have include Turning Point: Fall of Liberty and Black 2 in this, they could be extremely good games and HL 2 should also be included

Kber81 have they actually confirmed the name "Rise of Man"?

Back onto the resistance issue, I think that it would have done incredibly well if the PS3 had had a larger install base. I beleive that around 1:3 in PS3 owners have that game (me included) and although that percentage would decrease, it would still sell bucket loads.

Having never played Gears of War, I cannot compare, however, isn't gears of war a third person shooter, so that makes it different from the rest. Also, if we are including third person shooters as well, how well can GRAW 2 and RSV (I know it's 1st and 3rd) compete?

This is going to be the biggest clash of First-Person shooters!!!

Who do you think will take the throne, and prevail?

Halo 3 Vs. Gears of War Vs. Metroid Prime 3 Vs. Resistance: Fall of Man

Well, Gears of War and Resistance: Fall of Man have already come out, so we know more about those two games than Metroid Prime 3 and Halo 3. Personally, I think Gears of War is better than Resistance: Fall of Man. Even the reviews agree with me. Now, I think Halo 3 is going to push Gears of War off the top of the ladder, and steal its trophy as best First-Person shooter. Not only is it going to be almost 2 years newer (which leaves room for graphical supremecy), but also because... Well... It's Halo 3! Must I say any more? As for Metroid Prime 3, seeing the reviews of previous Metroid games on the Gamecube, almost totally equal that of Halo (little more or little less), it is really going to be hard to say which game is going to be better. Both games are in the exact same category, so it will be a perfectly fair match. Halo 3 should win in the graphics department, and Metroid Prime 3 should win with controls.

Anyways, this is how I think it's going to end:

1. Halo 3
2. Metroid Prime 3
3. Gears of War
4. Resistance: Fall of Man

All four games will be wonderful, but I think Halo 3 will edge it out at the very end.

What are your opinions?

Ugh. As already mentioned, Gears of War is not a first person shooter. It's third person. Also, Halo 3 doesn't look very good so far. Gears of War will most definitely look better than Halo 3 because GoW was designed to look great. It's slower paced and runs at 30fps. The environments are also smaller in GoW.

The graphics on MP3 look terrible so far but what are you gonna do with a Wii shooter? Not compare the graphics to the next gen consoles I guess.  Itcould very well end up with the best gameplay, though.  Controls could very well go to this game until console FPSs use keyboards and mice.

I expect the Halo 3 single player won't be very good but that's only based on the single player from the last 2 games. Gears of War wasn't very great in that area either so I'd say Resistance was the more complete game so far. I think review scores slant towards graphics, but it really doesn't matter. It all comes down to what you prefer. The different play styles in all 4 games will be preferred to different people anyway. I like the 40-player lag-free resistance, but that's me.

GoW2 versus Resistance 2 should be interesting. But if you continue to compare these games you should include a lot of others (such as Haze and Halflife 2) since there are plenty of other shooters (third and first).

Name is just a rumour (from GDC 2007) but as for me it sounds good. Only sure thing right now is a fact there will be a sequel and also a PSP version.

im not surprised there will be a sequel, it was one of the only semi-successful PS3 games... Well, i dunno if Halo 3 will surpass GOW. It may surpass it in terms of sales, but if i remember correctly Halo 2 wasnt exactly the best game ever. Also, about Metroid, in my opinion its a drastically different kind of shooter, more of an adventure/shooter game than a proper FPS, thats why i like ti so much. My opinion: 1.Gow 2.Metroid 3.Halo 3 4.Resistance (which wasnt exactly groundbreaking)

"WTF" is what Im thinking. This thread is a no brainer. Halo 3 (10.5+m units sold) Gears of War (4.5m+ Units sold) Metroid Prime 3 (2.75m units sold) Resistance: FoM (2.25m units sold)

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

i think killzone 2 will surprise alot of people.. people have to rememeber that it was on the ps2.. back then everyone was expecting it to surpass halo in every category.. which is why it only sold like 800k in its lifespan... but it was on the less far powerful system.... now its fair game and also no excuses because the ps3 is more powerful or just as powerful as the 360

Just what reviews have you been reading? The average review score is 73% according to gamerankings.com. Here's some of the weak points about the game from the IGN review (7.5) and these are mentioned in many other reviews too.

"The framerate is disastrous and has a serious detrimental impact on gameplay, often leading to missed shots, unobserved enemies, and general disorientation. Also, while Killzone features some remarkable still frame visuals for the PlayStation 2, movement creates some rather serious burps. Characters that don't animate facially when speaking in-game is a slight, but the more serious visual hiccups are polygonal seams (the white shimmering or breaking that happens where two polygons meet in an environment) and a really hilarious LOD system."

"The first major gameplay oriented problem with Killzone is that the AI is about as intelligent as an orange rolling down a hill."

"Despite focusing on the same kinds of heavily scripted action sequences as Allied Assault or Call of Duty, Killzone never delivers the scale."

"It's not uncommon to walk in front of a character and see a blurry mishmash of polygons that would barely pass as PSOne acceptable. It's not uncommon to turn a corner and see a hill that looks like a grey temporal void, or a floor that's a long sheet of pure brown. It's pretty ridiculous and happens way too much to be healthy."

"Know that multiplayer is subject to the same technological deficiencies as singleplayer. Furthermore, in a competitive environment it can be very disheartening to lose a match simply because your framerate dropped to unacceptable levels or the control was too clunky to get a proper shot off."

"When characters in the distance or as close as one foot away do anything they might only draw two or three frames of animation. It's like watching a Southpark character spontaneously move from one position to the next."

EDIT: most of the technical problems are probably fixed in Kz 2, but I'm not a fan of the plot either, so they have to make substantial improvements to reach a classic status. Then again, I didn't like Halo at all, so maybe I'm not the best person to evaluate these run-of-the-mill scifi shooters.

at least he's downgraded his expectation from 15 mil before. 10.5 million may be achievabl, but I highly doubt it. I don't think we're going to see Halo 3 sales higher than Halo 2.
