Oof, you don't see MH going often in the negatives ....

Anyway, Persona 5R is burning the ground so far ! (SMT V when Atlus ???!!)

I will never understand why SMT is with Nintendo when it could be way bigger if it was on PS4-PS5 where the people that would enjoy to play it are there.

The other said it. SMT had it's bigger success on Nintendo system with SMT I/II (SNES) and SMT IV/IVA on 3DS. Heck even the remaster of the spin-off Devil Survivor on 3DS sold better than Nocturne. Nocturne quasi flopped on PS2, that's the end of it.  SMT is weirdly unsuccessful with PS devices while it midly successful on Nintendo devices.

But that's also because Persona got the majority of the mind-share on Playstation.

SMT IV is the best selling SMT game btw

Devil Summoner had ~350k on the Saturn, which is the best selling SMT game in Japan.

Also Nocturne sold just 15k less than SMT IV so the post above me is rather amusing.

Except the numbers for SMT IV are rather old (Was over 600K in 2015), doesn't count digital and Atlus confirmed it's leading status for a while now. Actually, if I remember right, they were pleased with SMT IVA sales for a sequel which is approx. half of what IV did.

BTW, Devil Summoner was the best selling JRPG on the Saturn in Japan but that's hardly the achievement considering the Saturn's librairy. Honestly, I'd be rather curious to see SMT I/II sales figures in Japan cuz back then Atlus considered them as massive success.

"Heck even the remaster of the spin-off Devil Survivor on 3DS sold better than Nocturne." - Eh, that Spin-Off is the 2nd best selling SMT game according to VGC, so losing to that isn't exactly an issue is it? Nocturne is the third best selling SMT game lol.

But really without multiplatform releases or at the very least a recent release on PlayStation at all to compare you can't say one way or the other. Just as it can't be said that Persona wouldn't do better on Switch than PlayStation. We just can't know that.

Before MHW came out people were saying it would flop because it was on PlayStation and should have released on Nintendo, as that's where the series has had the most success. Yet MHW was a gigantic success on PS4.

I also wouldn't say SMT is even mildly successful, but it must be doing well enough to keep going.

Figures from October 2017:

  • Megami Tensei series (Launched 1987) – Approx. 7.2 million units across 28 total editions (packaged and digital total)
  • Persona series (Launched 1996) – Approx. 8.5 million units across 13 total editions (packaged and digital total)

So we have Megami Tensei selling an average of just 0.26m per "edition" while Persona sells an average of 0.65m per "edition".

Basically we have no idea which system would sell more unless an identical game released on both at the same time.

Predictions (Made July 2019)

LTD: PS4 - 130m, Switch - 110m, XBO - 52m       2019 : PS4 - 15m, Switch - 18.8m, XBO - 4.8m        2020: Switch - 22m (Peak Year)

Can't say that I'd be mad to see great games passing off each others in the chart ^^

I can't honestly disagree with what you're saying. It is true that we can't confirm otherwise unless Atlus pulls these games as multiplatform releases, but so far, it isn't beyond a reach to think that each systems have gathered a different niche in the same franchise, Nintendo focusing mostly on SMT while PS focuses more on Persona.

Though, MHW is a different situation, MH was already successful on PS devices (mostly PSP/PS2) and surfed on the same wave with the 3DS games so even I feel ashamed to think MHW would have flopped on PS4.

Now, Atlus had only released 1 mainline SMT (not counting Digital Devil Saga) game and it ended up as a flop (especially the original release before the Maniax version or "Nocturne" in the West) while Nintendo systems enjoyed most of it's succesful days with the recently best selling IV/IVA and Devil Surivor.

But sure, let's see how both SMT and Persona fares when they'll become multiplatform release for their sixth iteration !

Also the sales chart you presented is a bit old :

I admit Dx2 (Mobile SMT game) is for something in the results xD

Might as well do this here, but the Persona series reached 10 million copies sold :

Most of it coming from PQ2 surely.

Ok but what does the Saturn have to do with the PS4 audience being a better pick lol

Nothing. Just when I see an inaccurate statement I correct it. Pretty normal thing to do when someone talks without facts lol

I was talking about WW, as the original statement clearly meant WW.

Pokemon, Monster Hunter, and Dragon Quest. There's the Japan I know.
