To be fair to Japan, neither Dragon Age or Mass Effect were ever any big hits there, and I won't even mention Bioware's CRPG past, so maybe even though Bioware fans are let down by Anthem in the west, maybe it's widely accepted in Japan? After all, like 200,000 copies of God Eater 3 were sold a couple months ago. Maybe Anthem looks amazing to those players given the much larger freedom of movement and such?
